No habrá que esperar hasta enero de 2010 para probar al reemplazante de Vista; su versión de prueba está disponible y gratis. Eso sí, sólo en inglés.

"Ésta será la mejor versión de Windows nunca vista", dijo un histriónico Steve Ballmer, el presidente ejecutivo de Microsoft, en el comienzo de la feria tecnológica Consumer Electronics Show (CES), en Las Vegas.

Se refería al sistema operativo Windows 7, el sucesor del malogrado Vista. "Hemos puesto todos los ingredientes correctos -simplicidad, confiabilidad y velocidad- y hemos trabajado duro para lograrlo a la perfección y luego", dijo.

La sobreexcitación tiene una razón: convencer a un público escéptico luego de las malas cifras de Vista.

No son pocos los que han optado por quedarse con la versión anterior del sistema operativo; el XP. Por eso, el nuevo Windows 7 tiene que superar varios escollos. Tiene que ser amigable, robusto y compatible.

Eso es lo que promete.

Desde hoy se podrá bajar su versión beta en www.micro soft.com/windows7. Es gratis y está en inglés.

Promete aprovechar la energía en los notebooks y demora menos en prender y apagar. Pero lo más importante, es que no necesitaría un "supercomputador" para un desempeño aceptable.

Además, se deshizo de las insistentes alertas, posibilitando el control sobre ellas. Uno decide el nivel de seguridad.

Al prender el computador, en vez de anunciar "hay redes disponibles", las muestra directamente. También da mayor libertad en la elección de widgets -esas pequeñas ventanas que dan el pronóstico del tiempo o la hora- y uno decide en qué parte de la pantalla los ubica.

Es un tedio cuando se tienen múltiples ventanas abiertas y no se las puede encontrar. Una barra de previsualización permite verlas, con sus pestañas incluidas, y manejarlas: maximizarlas, minimizarlas o cerrarlas.

También ordena las pantallas en forma inteligente, sin tener que ajustarlas manualmente: arrástrelas hacia los lados y ellas compartirán la pantalla.

Su sistema multitouch funciona bien, y es menos engorroso conectar y sincronizar cámaras, MP3, teléfonos e impresoras.

La versión final, que saldría a la venta en 2010, encriptará la información y será compatible con IPv6 (la nueva versión de direcciones IP para internet).
