Durante años, los gobiernos occidentales han utilizado los superordenadores para modelar armas de guerra nuclear. Ahora una empresa en China utiliza estas poderosas máquinas para ocuparse de los reinos fantásticos de World of Warcraft.
Las supercomputadoras, que son hasta un millón de veces más rápidas que los típicos ordenadores de mesa, siguen siendo productos imprescindibles en los almacenes de datos de los laboratorios y universidades nacionales de EE UU, Japón y Europa occidental. Pero a lo largo de los últimos años, la reducción del precio de los grandes sistemas ha permitido que una gama más amplia de corporaciones e instituciones, entre ellas muchas en China e India, haya podido adquirirlas para todo tipo de usos, desde procesar el grafismo de una película hasta buscar petróleo.
Hace sólo 18 meses, China e India no contaban con un sólo sistema entre los 25 más rápidos del mundo. Pero en la última lista de los 500 ordenadores más rápidos, publicada el 17 de noviembre, China ocupaba el décimo puesto, con lo que se convirtió en el único país en el Top10 además de EE UU. India, por su parte, tenía la treceava máquina más rápida, con lo que ganaba a Japón, líder durante mucho tiempo.
Ahora China afirma tener 15 de los 500 ordenadores más rápidos del mundo. Esto la convierte en el país con más supercomputadoras fuera de Estados Unidos, Europa occidental y Japón. La presencia de superordenadores en países emergentes como China e India dice mucho de sus crecientes ambiciones nacionales, al igual que el estado cambiante de la ciencia y de los negocios.
"Estos otros países están por detrás de Estados Unidos y quizás de otros países de Europa occidental, pero están ahí", afirma Jack Dongarra, científico informático de la Universidad de Tennessee, que ayuda a mantener Top500, la lista oficial de los superordenadores más rápidos. "Estos países están dejando muy claras sus intenciones".
La inmensa mayoría de las supercomputadoras las construyen IBM y Hewlett- Packard. Pero el mejor sistema de China, situado en el Centro de Superordenadores de Shanghai, lo construyó el fabricante chino Dawning. Al igual que muchas de las máquinas más rápidas, el sistema de Shanghai llevará a cabo tareas de investigación, que sigue siendo la función más importante de las supercomputadoras. La capacidad que tienen estas máquinas de simular experimentos, explosiones y el clima las convierten en un elemento crucial en una época en la que los descubrimientos científicos a menudo se hacen manipulando grandes bases de datos y no realizando experimentos físicos.
Aun así, la brusca bajada del precio de estos ordenadores rápidos hace que sean más atractivos para las empresas, que los emplean para usos que habrían resultado poco prácticos hace sólo unos años.
Durante mucho tiempo, algunas de las máquinas más rápidas de China han pertenecido a The9, un creador de videojuegos que posee los derechos locales de distribución de la franquicia World of Warcraft de Blizzard Entertainment.
Este año, The9 alardeaba de haber acogido más de un millón de jugadores online de World of Warcraft al mismo tiempo.
De todos los recién llegados a la carrera de los superordenadores, China parece ser el más centrado. "Si nos fijamos en lo que China se está gastando para ir adelantando puestos, queda claro que es una prioridad nacional", asegura Douglas Comer, vicepresidente de investigación de Cisco Systems.
