Los periódicos de papel podrían tener los días contados en EE.UU.: ante la caída de la circulación y los ingresos publicitarios, cada vez más diarios están suprimiendo su edición impresa para concentrarse sólo en las versiones online.

El Christian Science Monitor, uno de los decanos de la prensa del país, sorprendía esta semana al sector al anunciar que no publicará más su edición en papel a partir de abril del próximo año y que los lectores tendrán que contentarse con leer sus noticias en la red.

"Proyectamos aprovechar Internet para hacer que Monitor sea más rápido, mejorar su relevancia, aumentar beneficios y reducir costes", dijo Judy Wolff, presidente de la junta directiva de este diario con siete premios Pulitzer en su haber.

El rotativo prevé perder unos 18,9 millones de dólares en su actual año contable, que finaliza en abril. Su circulación entre abril y septiembre de 2008 cayó un 1,7 por ciento hasta poco más de 50.000 ejemplares, lejos de los 230.000 que llegó a tener en 1970.

El Christian Science Monitor no es el primer periódico estadounidense en dar este paso, pero sí, quizá, el más grande y renombrado.

Capital Times de Madison, Wisconsin, anunció el pasado abril que empezaría a publicarse principalmente en Internet, lo que también ocurrirá con The Daily Telegram, otro periódico de Wisconsin y varios rotativos locales de Ohio, que desaparecerán de los quioscos el próximo lunes.

A la noticia del Christian Science Monitor siguieron otras en la que ha sido una de las peores semanas para el periodismo escrito en EE.UU.

El grupo Gannet, primer editor de diarios del país, entre ellos USA Today, anunció que prescindirá del 10 por ciento de su plantilla y Los Angeles Times comunicó el despido de 75 miembros de su equipo de redacción.

Según los datos difundidos también esta semana por Audit Bureau of Circulations, la circulación de los 507 diarios que esta organización chequea bajó un 4,6 por ciento entre abril y septiembre de este año, hasta los 38,16 millones de copias.

Dan Gillmor, director del Centro Knight para Medios Digitales de la Universidad de Arizona, cree que Christian Science Monitor no será el único diario que tenga que eliminar su edición de papel en los próximos meses.

"Será una transición lenta pero, a la larga, la mayor parte de lo que hoy leemos en letra impresa estará online", dijo a EFE este experto, quien opina que, paralelamente, aparecerán nuevos aparatos que harán más sencilla la lectura de documentos electrónicos.

Edición digital: cómo mejorar la fotografía

La fotografía digital ha desplazado rápidamente a la convencional, y no es para menos, porque presenta infinidad de ventajas en un mundo casi totalmente informatizado, donde preferimos tener capturas para ver en nuestro ordenador en vez de en un álbum de papel, que ocupa espacio y se estropea con el paso del tiempo.

Las ventajas son muchas otras, una capacidad de almacenamiento muy superior, cuyo límite estará dado por la tarjeta de memoria que empleemos pero que, aunque sea la más pequeña del mercado, podrá guardar muchas más fotos que un rollo de los convencionales. Además, la posibilidad de aplicar efectos a las tomas con solo apretar un botón es un recurso muy divertido para quienes deseen tomar fotografías artísticas.

Además, las máquinas de fotografía digitales modernas son muy fáciles de usar por quien no tiene conocimientos y dispone de gran cantidad de prestaciones que pueden ser utilizadas por un usuario intermedio o profesional; es decir que una misma máquina puede tener usos hogareños o semi profesionales dependiendo del nivel de conocimiento y práctica del usuario.

Para los iniciados recientemente o para quienes toman capturas espontáneas sin tiempo de preparar la luz, los contrastes y ajustar el foco, las cámaras digitales disponen de un modo automático muy conveniente que realizará todos los ajustes necesarios para que la velocidad de obturación, la apertura, el balance de blancos y el enfoque sean los adecuados y generen una captura limpia que luego pueda ser descargada en nuestro ordenador para imprimirla o compartirla por vía electrónica.

Ya sea que hayas realizado las capturas en el modo automático o manual, debiendo realizar ajustes precisos es el momento de descargar las imágenes en el ordenador para luego aplicar un editor de imágenes y realizar algunas correcciones, como la eliminación de ojos rojos o brillos molestos delante del lente.

Algunas cámaras digitales modernas ya incluyen algunos filtros de optimización de las fotos, pero si la que tienes no es de éstas, puedes utilizar un software de fotoedición para mejorar tus tomas. Es probable, además, que tu cámara incluya en el paquete un software propio o libre para edición digital, pero si no te conforma y quieres probar algo más, aquí tienes un listado de los programas que puedes utilizar; algunos son de licencia libre y otros pagos.

Adobe Photoshop, mucho se haba de este programa que es usado a niveles profesionales, en el mundo de la publicidad y las revistas; sin dudas, hoy es lo más difundido en edición digital de fotografías. No es muy fácil de usar aunque sus últimas versiones han incluidos accesos y modos para usuarios novatos o que sólo desean eliminar ojos rojos y alguna que otra imperfección de la piel. Sin embargo, sirve para muchísimo más y los ejemplos los vemos en todas las revistas, aunque es muy difícil darse cuenta de los retoques hechos por profesionales.

Photoshop Elements no tan completo como el anterior pero las utilidades básicas permanecen, por lo que es fácil de usar y bastante práctico; algunas cámaras de fotos incluyen este software de manera gratuita.

Roxio PhotoSuite, es una herramienta que permite la edición, captura y organización de imágenes digitales; permitiendo, además compartir las fotografías gracias a una aplicación que nos facilita la creación de álbumes electrónicos. Así mismo, desde el mismo programa disponemos de la opción de imprimir nuestras imágenes o fotografías digitales o bien, enviarlas por correo electrónico a nuestros amigos.

Es fácil de usar para un usuario inicial pues dispone de un interfaz claro y sencillo, además de contar con un asistente que brinda ayuda y guía durante todo el proceso, en el cual podremos emplear la herramienta de reducción ojos rojos, corrección de la saturación, brillo, nitidez, y otras.

PhotoLine es un software shareware similar al Adobe Photoshop con herramientas muy sofisticadas y útiles, pero con licencia limitada. De este software podemos destacar la amplia cantidad de formatos de imágenes aceptados entre los que se destacan PLD, TIFF, BMP, GIF, JPEG, PNG y PSD. Aparte de las opciones habituales que podemos encontrar en otros editores como pintar, clonar, filtrar y mejorar superficies, este programa ofrece otras herramientas muy interesantes como la proyección en 3D, efectos dinámicos para capas, sombras y dibujo vectorial que lo asemeja al Corel Draw.

Otra de las herramientas muy prácticas es que nos permitirá realizar documentos con plantillas, utilizando nuestras imágenes para construir tarjetas de felicitaciones, personales, papelería y otros documentos.

GIMP es la versión de editor digital de fotografías para Linux, aunque también puede ser usado en Windows; es una herramienta muy completa aunque un poco difícil de utilizar si no se tienen conocimientos de edición y dominio del software. Los resultados logrados con el GIMP son iguales o superiores a los obtenidos con Adobe Photoshop, con la gran diferencia que es gratuito y de código abierto.

Existen diversos editores digitales que ofrecen sus servicios en línea, como el SplashUp, Pixer.us, Pixenate y Aviary, que permiten cargar una imagen para realizar los retoques desde una página web, donde están dispuestas las herramientas entre las que se pueden encontrar el corrector de ojos rojos, una tijera para recorte, superposición de capas para fotomontaje y etiquetas para decorar.

Entre estos programas destacaremos el Pixenate como el más rápido y sencillo de usar, pues, si bien está en Inglés, las herramientas están todas dispuestas sobre el escritorio, en un costado de la imagen y las identificamos por un logo sencillo de interpretar: rotar, redimensionar, acercar, alejar, recortar, reflejar, corregir ojos rojos y blanquear los dientes con sólo presionar un botón. Al culminar los retoques, que se hacen muy rápido se pueden guardar la imagen en el ordenador o bien cargarla a Flickr para compartirla. Las posibilidades son limitadas, pero su uso es muy sencillo.

Splashup permite la edición múltiple, es decir en grupos de imágenes, lo cual es muy útil si tienes muchas imágenes y poco tiempo y los cambios que quieres realizar son estandarizados para todas las fotografías por igual. Por ejemplo, si lo único que necesitas es redimensionar las imágenes, hacerlas una por una te llevará demasiado tiempo, para eso SplashUp es lo mejor.

Otra de sus conveniencias es que permite compartir las imágenes en línea por medio de Picasa, Flickr, Facebook o un servicio propio llamado Splashup, por lo que no tendrás que andar moviendo archivos, cargándolos y descargándolos si lo que quieres es compartirlos.

Aviary se destaca por sus increíbles herramientas que, sin dudas, son pensadas para diseñadores y artistas que buscan herramientas en línea equivalentes al Corel Draw y que proponen infinidad de propuestas para la creatividad. Sus herramientas son Toucan, Peacock y Phoenix, esta última para edición de imágenes

El vertiginoso crecimiento de las redes sociales en Latinoamérica Cuando se desató a principios de año el conflicto entre la presidenta argentina Cristina Fernández de Kirchner y el sector agrario por los impuestos a las exportaciones, surgieron grupos en apoyo y en oposición a la mandataria desde la red social Facebook, una de las más populares en el mundo. Con aseveraciones como "Odio a Cristina" o "Cristina yo te banco (te apoyo)", la web 2.0 permitió a los ciudadanos generar debates y expresarse sin censura.   Las redes sociales ya congregan a más de 230 millones de personas en todo el mundo. En Latinoamérica se espera un gran crecimiento para 2008: se espera que alcance el 12% del total de usuarios a nivel mundial, de acuerdo con datos de  Internet World Stats, sitio web de estadísticas internacionales. Mientras que según las estimaciones de la consultora online comScore realizadas en marzo, la cantidad de usuarios de Internet en los cinco principales países de la región: Argentina, Brasil, Chile, Colombia y México, llegó a más de 47,5 millones. Si a esto sumamos los usuarios de Internet en Puerto Rico y los hispanos de Estados Unidos, la cantidad supera los 67,5 millones de hispanohablantes.   Christian D. Doyle, profesor de Tecnologías de la Información de la Universidad Austral, en Argentina, explica que "el objetivo principal de las redes sociales virtuales es agrupar individuos que tienen necesidades similares. Éstas pueden ser laborales, sentimentales, sociales, lúdicas, etc., todo depende de la red social vinculante. De esta manera, de forma gratuita o muy económica, ayudan a las personas miembro a conseguir lo que buscan o quieren".   Pero lo ocurrió con Cristina Kirchner no es ninguna novedad, tampoco que su hija Florencia tenga un Fotolog con todas las imágenes de su vida social. Hasta el candidato presidencial de EEUU Barak Obama tiene su propio perfil en Facebook y ha puesto grandes esfuerzos en difundir su mensaje por Internet. Tal parece que ésta es una de las aristas del futuro de Internet, ya que los políticos argentinos, en vistas a las próximas campañas para legisladores en 2009, pondrán en marcha la creación de sus perfiles en redes sociales y se están contratando periodistas especializados para esos fines.   Martín Becerra, profesor de la Universidad de Quilmes e investigador del Conicet (Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas) de Argentina, apunta que "los políticos utilizan esta herramienta como una forma de afinidad selectiva. O sea, que se terceriza la capacidad de relación y se logra acceder más fácilmente a otros perfiles, como los jóvenes".   Desde Sonico, una red social que nació en Argentina con el fin de llegar al resto de Latinoamérica, Portugal y España, se conectan más de 26 millones de usuarios. Tomás O´Farrel, socio y Chief Marketing Officer de la empresa detalla que "el equipo que hace Sonico cree firmemente que hace falta una red exclusiva de la cultura latina, que contemple los usos característicos que sus miembros le dan a la Web. La particularidad de nuestro público es que utiliza Sonico como soporte online de su vida offline. Los amigos que tienen en sus cuentas son en su inmensa mayoría sacados directamente de su vida habitual; en otras palabras, son reales, y no producto de una acumulación de contactos".   En este análisis coincide el profesor Becerra debido a que "si bien los latinos tenemos predisposición a encontrarnos cara a cara, los internautas argentinos somos de los que más usan esta forma de comunicarse porque nos gusta estar en contacto. Es decir, las redes sociales son un complemento de nuestra forma de socializar. De hecho, desde Internet se organizan encuentros cara a cara, como por ejemplo recitales".   Sin embargo, Becerra advierte sobre un efecto negativo en las comunidades virtuales: "Es una concepción hipergenerosa y exagerada del concepto de amistad. Porque creo que escribirles en una semana a unos 500 contactos es suficiente para no poder hacer otra cosa, es imposible".   Una de las tendencias dentro de las comunidades virtuales es la especialización o la caracterización por temas, como las que agrupan personas que comparten iniciativas solidarias. Pero las que crecen a un ritmo acelerado son las que vinculan profesionales, como LinkedIn, que nació hace 5 años. "En mi opinión –dice Doyle-, el mayor efecto o resultado positivo de una red que vincule contactos laborales o profesionales, es la oferta de empleo y de proyectos. Esto permite que las personas se puedan asociar independientemente de la ciudad o el país en donde viven; posibilita que se desarrollen nuevas ideas de negocios y que se generen empleos a nivel virtual o a distancia. Creo que este tipo de redes está cambiando la estructura de la relación laboral de una manera altamente positiva".   En el caso de Sonico, "este tipo de redes verticales son también muy útiles como herramientas de trabajo. En Sonico estamos trabajando en ello para poder facilitar a todos los usuarios segmentar su perfil entre contactos "laborales" y contactos "personales", afirma O´Farrel.   Hacia la rentabilidad Más allá de ser utilizadas como vía de contacto, las redes sociales más conocidas como Facebook, MySpace, Hi5, Orkut, entre otras, tratan de buscar la forma de ser rentables. Doyle, de la UniversidadAustral, sostiene que "mientras más miembros vincule una red, y más datos mueva, seguramente se convertirá en una empresa capaz de facturar una suma interesante, principalmente a través de la venta de espacio publicitario (banners, pop-ups, etc.). Este tema puede ser que moleste a algunos usuarios, sobre todo a aquellos que prefieren navegar o interactuar tranquilos y no les agrada ser "invadidos" por la publicidad; o puede que agrade a algunos otros, ya que se pueden topar con ofertas interesantes. Todo depende de cada individuo".   Dependiendo de la fuente de la investigación, los ingresos mundiales por publicidad en Internet estarían entre los 50.000 y los 80.000 millones de dólares anuales para 2010. La posibilidad de segmentar a la comunidad por edad, sexo y localidad, entre otras opciones, hace que las redes sociales sean de gran atractivo para los anunciantes y para las agencias de publicidad. Hasta ahora, las estrategias más utilizadas son la publicidad online, las recargas online de celular, los servicios de valor agregado (crear álbumes personalizados y solicitar su impresión) y los servicios móviles (alertas de cumpleaños vía SMS, regalos virtuales, etc).   De todas formas, el circuito económico en Internet está en una etapa de adaptación y no todas las empresas lo ven como un negocio. Doyle indica que "todavía falta mucho para que las empresas se adapten en gran parte o por completo a este mercado. Muchas multinacionales ya lo están haciendo. Por ejemplo, Nike ya está destinando el 70% de su presupuesto publicitario a Internet". En este sentido, añade Doyle, "ya comienza a haber una tendencia liderada por las grandes empresas. Pero lo cierto es que todavía falta mucho, y más aquí en la Argentina, donde hay una gran cantidad de empresas que siguen viendo a Internet como un mercado de vidrios de colores y tapitas de botella, restándole la importancia que realmente tiene, y la que va a tener".   Según la experiencia de Sonico, explica O' Farrel, "las empresas y agencias progresivamente están descubriendo el potencial y las bondades de las redes sociales como medio y canal para llegar a sus audiencias. Este año veremos grandes avances en este campo".   Guillermo Riera, director de We Media Buenos Aires –evento organizado para analizar las nuevas formas de comunicación-, agrega otra característica de la publicidad online: "Algunas han logrado darle un uso inteligente, haciendo que los avisos tengan relación con el perfil del usuario o con sus intereses. Lo cual le agrega un beneficio adicional al usuario, ya que éste puede encontrar en los avisos publicitarios una herramienta más para hacer su tarea".   Por otro lado, muchas redes sociales han recibido el apoyo económico de inversores privados que apuestan a un promisorio futuro de esta nueva forma de comunicación. MySpace fue comprada en 2005 por News Corp. en U$S 580 millones; y en 2007 el 1,6% de Facebook fue adquirida por Microsoft en U$S 240 millones.   La punta del iceberg Después del mail, el chat, el fotolog, el blog personal, entre otras herramientas de comunicación virtual, las redes sociales aparecen como una nueva forma de interactuar en el mapa mundial. Estas "ventanas al mundo" permiten que una persona pueda dar a conocer toda la información que desee sobre su vida y mostrarla en el ciberespacio.   Según Guillermo Riera, ésta es sólo la punta del iceberg: "Por primera vez en la historia de la humanidad cualquiera de nosotros tiene la capacidad de comunicarse masivamente. Esto es un cambio histórico, porque ya no hay pocas fuentes de información y muchos lectores. Ahora hay ilimitadas fuentes de información (de distintas calidades, claro), y un número enorme de lectores que potencialmente también son generadores de información".   "Yo haría una analogía con los viejos clubes sociales, en los que los varones, por ejemplo, se encontraban con la excusa de jugar tenis. Pero ahora esa socialización es a nivel planeta, antes era reducido a un sexo o clase social", ejemplifica Becerra.   En su opinión, uno de los desafíos es integrar más capas poblacionales ya que "no todos los sectores sociales acceden a Internet, pero con el tiempo crecerá la penetración, por eso hay potencial de que crezcan mucho las redes sociales". Para ponerlo en perspectiva, en Argentina hay una penetración de Internet de solo el 22% de la población.   La tendencia indica que en el futuro cercano las comunidades de tipo horizontal le cederán protagonismo a las de tipo vertical (más específicas y segmentadas). "Sonico se inscribe en el segundo grupo, ya que su foco está puesto en los usuarios de habla hispana, atendiendo a sus costumbres propias", dice O' Farrel.   Según la mirada de Doyle, "las redes sociales tienen mucho futuro por delante, de hecho, están en expansión constante. Creo que en los próximos años veremos el nacimiento de nuevos núcleos de socialización virtuales que apuntarán a la diversidad, y que unirán individuos dentro de ella. Estamos frente a una verdadera revolución tecnológica-social como nunca antes se dio en la raza humana... aún no hemos visto nada".   En sintonía con Doyle, el director de We Media reflexiona que hace pocos años "nadie tenía en mente a Facebook, LinkedIn o YouTube. Hoy nos parece que siempre hubieran estado allí. Lo cierto es que el número de usuarios de redes sociales en la región sigue multiplicándose. En los países del primer mundo el crecimiento parece haberse frenado un poco, pero el uso sigue siendo intenso. No podemos saber si seguirán siendo lo que son hoy en día o si se convertirán en otra cosa. Lo que sí es indefectible es que las nuevas herramientas tecnológicas han abierto una puerta adicional a la comunicación entre las personas sumamente interesante y con un potencial inimaginable".

   Microsoft Ibérica mantuvo ayer un encuentro con 70 ONG a las que impartió información y formación sobre cómo pueden mejorar su funcionamiento interno y multiplicar así el impacto social de sus actividades solidarias a través del uso de las nuevas tecnologías.

   En un comunicado, la compañía explica que en el encuentro, denominado '¿En qué nos ayuda la tecnología?' y en el que también colaboraron Fundación Chandra, Fundación Tomillo y Technosite, "se expusieron de un modo práctico aquellas soluciones tecnológicas que las ONG tienen a su alcance para aumentar su impacto en la sociedad".

   En este sentido, Microsoft y Technosite pusieron recientemente en marcha el 'programa Dono' (www.proyectodono.org), gracias al cual las ONG puedan conseguir el software imprescindible para mejorar su funcionamiento a un 4 por ciento de su coste real en el mercado.

   El evento contó, entre otros, con la presencia del director de Desarrollo Corporativo de Microsoft Ibérica, Carlos de la Iglesia; y la directora de Responsabilidad Corporativa de Microsoft Ibérica, Olvido Nicolás.

   En su intervención, De la Iglesia destacó que "hoy en día, las ONG se enfrentan a los mismos retos que cualquier organización privada: aumentar la eficiencia, agilidad y productividad internas para difundir su labor y obtener resultados que beneficien al mayor número de personas".

   "Las tecnologías y el mundo de Internet son, sin duda, la pieza clave para lograrlo, y nos satisface enormemente poner a disposición de las ONG españolas las herramientas y recursos necesarios para contar con una infraestructura que les permita llegar cada día más lejos en la lucha por la igualdad social", indicó.
